This week we learnt what an EdCamp was, and then held our own. This method of discussion and professional development was way more engaging than listening to a keynote. Not only did you have an option on the topic you participated in you also got to suggest it. At the beginning of an EdCamp attendees post/write up topics on board. These topics are then voted on then given a room and time slot.
The most memorable EdCamp I participated in was about gender identity. The great thing about most topics is that they’re so vague that the conversation can go in so many directions. In the particular conversation we touched on:
- How to make school a more inclusive/safe space
- How do we do this for our student
- In what ways can we make our classroom inclusive for all genders
- Gender neutral bathrooms
And much more! This topic stood out to me because I have an interest in teaching in middle school where this subject is more likely occur. Middle school is a time where students are changing and figuring out how to be comfortable in their bodies. Making gender a common conversation amongst teachers is vital to ensure students that are questioning their gender feel safe.
