The Starting Point

To Begin this journey I went to a dark climbing gym with disco lights and loud rave music to conquer the art of falling. Seems like a reasonable place to start right?

In highschool I had the luxury of partaking in the climbing academy for my senior year because the teacher told me that it is never too late to start. For reference, most people start climbing academy in grade nine. Although I had a late start, I was determined to try something new and learn as much as I possibly could. And so I did, I learn how to belay, tie myself in, and lead climb safely. One thing I didn’t consider is, I was terrified of falling. I hated the feeling, it was high up, what if I died? all of the normal things you may think of while scaling an artificial wall. Lucky for me, I had an equally determined teacher that helped me practice falling until I wasn’t scared anymore. Unfortunately, I graduated highschool and stopped climbing and now I am scared of falling again. Through this inquiry project my goal is re-master the art of falling and to take bigger falls without fear or hesitation. This week I started small with a top rope fall that I was comfortable with. Top rope falls tend to be smaller because there is less slack in the rope which means you won’t fall as far down. I’m terrified looking into the future of this project, but I’m excited to challenge myself with a goal I know I can accomplish.

This is what we are starting with…

  • This is so cool! I remember learning how to rock climb and belay in grade nine and always had the same nervous feeling about falling. It is cool to see you step out of your comfort zone and push yourself in this way. I am excited to see your falling skills improve throughout the term.
